In 2014 our chief CocoNut, Cecily, quit a successful retail career to follow her passion for clean food, setting out to make a product that people could trust was really good for them; one that would make people feel healthy as well as happy! After much experimenting, and a lot of ice cream tasting, Cecily made her obsession a delicious reality.
To date we have been awarded a Gold Star at the Great Taste Awards 2016, were Highly Commended at the Free From Food awards 2016, and won the Best Supplier 2015 at the international conference for the Institute of Functional Medicine - welcome recognition of the fact we are crazy generous with the healthy stuff (we've been told), and very much against the cheap fillers that, all too sadly, are often used.
WHY THE COCONUT?
Coconuts are truly one of the greatest gifts on the planet. In sanskrit the coconut palm is known as 'kalpa vriksha', meaning 'the tree that supplies all that is needed to live'. They are highly nutritious, a rich source of vitamins C, E and B1, B3, B5 and B6 as well as minerals like iron, selenium, sodium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous.
The saturated fats you find in coconuts are in the form of medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) - the good ones! Your body can't actually store MCFAs as fat, they stimulate the thyroid and with regular consumption increase your metabolism, helping to normalise cholesterol levels by promoting its conversion into pregnenolone. Science-y I know, but the big P counters fatigue, enhances memory and has a beautifying effect through improving circulation. If that wasn't enough the fatty acids in coconuts have antimicrobial and antifungal properties, great for maintaining optimum health.
